Eye care for growing eyes

Children’s eye tests at Taiwo Opticians check vision, eye alignment and focusing, so problems that affect learning can be found early.

When should a child have their first eye test?

Children rarely complain about their vision because they assume everyone sees the way they do. Children can have an NHS sight test at any age, and they do not need to be able to read. Book sooner if you notice squinting, an eye turn, headaches or sitting very close to screens.

A children’s eye test checks clarity of vision, focusing, eye coordination and eye health using pictures, shapes and letters suited to the child’s age. For children whose short-sightedness (myopia) is increasing, the optometrist can discuss myopia management options that aim to slow its progression.

How can I support my child’s eye health at home?

Encourage time outdoors every day, regular breaks from close work and screens, and good lighting for reading. If glasses are prescribed, help your child wear them as advised, and book a review if they complain of blurred vision or headaches.
