Glaucoma checks that watch closely

Glaucoma checks at Taiwo Opticians combine eye pressure measurement, optic nerve assessment and visual field tests to help find glaucoma early.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain. It usually affects side vision first and often causes no pain or early symptoms, so many people do not know they have it.

Damage from glaucoma cannot be reversed, but treatment with eye drops, laser or surgery can slow or stop further loss in most people, so early detection matters. Risk rises with age, a family history of glaucoma, short-sightedness and diabetes. When an optometrist finds signs of glaucoma, they refer you to the hospital eye service for diagnosis and treatment.

Who is it for?

  • Anyone aged 40 or over with a parent, brother, sister or child who has glaucoma
  • Adults over 50 who have not had a recent eye test
  • People told they have raised eye pressure
  • Anyone advised by their GP or hospital to have regular checks

What to expect

  1. 01

    Eye pressure

We measure the pressure inside each eye, one of the main risk factors for glaucoma.

  2. 02

    Optic nerve check

The optometrist examines the optic nerve, with imaging when it adds useful information.

  3. 03

    Visual field test

You press a button when you see small lights, which maps your side vision.

  4. 04

    Monitoring or referral

Results are compared with earlier visits, and you are referred to the hospital eye service when needed.

How do I live well with glaucoma?

Use your eye drops exactly as prescribed, even when your vision seems fine, and keep every monitoring appointment, because changes are usually only found through testing. Tell close family members about your diagnosis so they can be checked too.

Common questions

No. Vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored. Treatment aims to lower eye pressure and slow or stop further damage, which protects the vision you have.
